Traffic Engineering Services

For more than 59 years, the National Transportation Safety Organization (NTSO) has taken a unique, data-driven approach to road safety by analyzing traffic crash data, identifying high-risk locations and trends, and helping develop targeted safety projects. Over time, these individual improvements contributed to dramatic reductions in traffic fatalities and serious-injury crashes within NTSO member communities. To provide the technical expertise necessary to identify safety concerns and develop effective countermeasures, NTSO has a licensed and insured Professional Engineer (P.E.) specializing in traffic engineering on staff.

NTSO's approach and long-term results are unique not only in the United States, but worldwide. In one of its primary focus areas, Oakland County, Michigan, NTSO led a sustained transportation safety effort that achieved one of the lowest traffic crash fatality rates in the world. Despite significant growth in population and traffic volumes over the decades, the county's traffic fatality rate has fallen dramatically. This success demonstrates the value of a comprehensive, long-term approach that combines crash data analysis, traffic engineering, education, enforcement, emergency response, technology, and strong partnerships among government agencies, businesses, and community leaders.

NTSO has also been a longtime supporter of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and emerging transportation technologies. At various times, NTSO served on the Board of Directors of ITS Michigan and managed the statewide organization. From supporting the successful implementation of the Road Commission for Oakland County's FAST-TRAC adaptive traffic signal system to collaborating with the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and automotive companies on education and technology initiatives, NTSO has remained at the forefront of advancing innovative approaches to transportation safety.

NTSO strongly believes that technology, combined with sound engineering, quality data, and collaboration, will continue to play an increasingly important role in preventing crashes, reducing fatalities and serious injuries, and creating safer transportation systems for the future.

At this time, NTSO's traffic engineering services are available exclusively within the State of Michigan.

  • Attend Community Traffic Safety Committee Meetings

  • NTSO's Vice President of Traffic Engineering, a licensed and insured traffic engineer, will attend traffic safety committee meetings as requested.

  • Crash Data Analysis

  • Produce crash history reports to analyze traffic crash data in a variety of different types of reports specific to any UD-10 attributes reported.

  • Cut-Through Traffic Studies

  • Using traffic data collection and field observation, report on cut-through traffic issues.

  • Drone Site Observation

  • Utilizing an unmanned aircraft system, aerial observations of an area to identify potential issues, concerns, or conditions that may warrant further review may be conducted.

  • Gap Studies

  • Conduct gap study for the purpose of data collection requirements needed in determining appropriate traffic control device warrants.

  • On-Street and Off-Street Parking Capacity

  • Using nationally recognized standards, determine parking capacity and provide recommendations.

  • Pedestrian and Bicycle Studies

  • Collect data and make recommendations on pedestrian and bicycle facilities and crossings.

  • Review of Traffic Control Plans

  • Review construction/work zone traffic control plans for compliance with the Michigan Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MMUTCD).

  • Review of Traffic Impact Analysis

  • Review a traffic impact analysis for data accuracy and completeness.

  • Review of Traffic Impact Studies

  • Review a traffic impact study for data accuracy and completeness.

  • School Studies

  • Collect traffic crash data, conduct site visits to observe operations, and make recommendations on appropriate traffic control plans and devices.

  • Sight Distance Studies

  • Make field observations and take measurements to determine compliance with applicable standards.

  • Speed Limit Studies

  • Conduct field studies of traffic flow and site conditions to determine an appropriate speed limit recommendation.

  • Stop/Yield Sign Studies

  • Collect traffic data, take measurements, and conduct field observations to determine the appropriate traffic control for an intersection.

  • Traffic Calming

  • Collect traffic data, take measurements, and conduct field observations so a recommendation on traffic calming can be determined.
